Crafted from hand-woven Majdalawi fabric, this wallet includes a velcro closing and inside zipper. A perfect gift, full of artisanal tradition.

Majdalawi fabric, the indigo-dyed cotton with striking fuchsia or turquoise stripes interwoven with silk threads, was the signature material for a woman’s dress in the southern coastal area of historic Palestine. Before the Palestinian catastrophe in 1948 (when the Palestinian homeland was lost to the State of Israel and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians forced into exile), Palestine had several textile-producing centres, one of which was the city of Majdal (today the Israeli city of Ashkelon).

The Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children sustains the almost-lost art of majdalawi fabric through Atfaluna Crafts, a special income-generation project which supports and economically empowers hearing-impaired adults in the Gaza Strip.

About Atfaluna Crafts

Atfaluna Crafts is an income-generation project of Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children (estab. 1992), the only institution in the Gaza Strip that is devoted to education and services of people with hearing disabilities. The project is run primarily by deaf adults to produce and market quality Palestinian crafts, home accessories and furniture. In addition to the Crafts employees, the project provides an income for over 250 women who work from home to produce the embroideries.
