Star Pencil Case - Made in Palestine
Hand stitched pencil cases perfect for school or the office, embroidered in the traditional tatreez motif of a star surrounded by feathers.
Producer: Palestinian Embroidery Workshop
The Palestinian Embroidery Workshop was established by the Melkite Pastoral Center in 1988 in the city of Ramallah in order to provide an income for women needing to support their families during the first Intifada when many men had their working permits revoked, were unemployed or imprisoned. It now provides jobs for 250 women from Ramallah, 17 villages and 2 refugee camps in the surrounding area, including both Muslims and Christians.
In addition, the Center organises social activities and lectures for women, and hosts Palestinian lunches cooked by the embroiders for tour groups visiting the city.
The cross stitch or tatreez embroidery are inspired by traditional designs which symbolise the trees, flowers, and harvests of the land. The center is proud to be contributing to the continuation of transmission of this heritage which traditionally had been passed down from generation to generation of women through the embroidered dresses that Palestinians wore and which signified their village of origin.
