By Toshihiko Izutsu, Islamic Book Trust, paperback, 346 pages

In Ethico-Religious Concepts in the Qur’an, Toshihiko Izutsu provides a masterful and lucid exposition of the Quranic teachings.

This book consists of three parts:

  • An exposition of the methodological principles of semantic analysis
  • The relation, positive and negative, that exists between the pre-Islamic tribal moral code and the Islamic — in our particular case, Qur’anic — ethics
  • An analysis, by a consistent application of the methodological rules explained in the first section, of the major ethico-religious concepts in the Qur’an.

About the author:

Toshihiko Izutsu was a Japanese philosopher of language and mysticism and an Islamic scholar. He was a Professor at Keio University in Japan and authored many books on Islam and other religions.
