Producer: Bethlehem Arab Women's Union

The Bethlehem Arab Women’s Union preserves Bethlehem’s cultural heritage while supporting the livelihoods of local women. Founded in 1947 to aid refugees of the Nakba, it later began collecting traditional dresses (thobes) and reviving the art of Palestinian embroidery (tatreez).

Located near the Church of the Nativity, the Union’s gift shop and ethnographic museum, “Baitouna Al-Talhami” (“Our Bethlehem Home”), employ over 150 women from surrounding villages, including students who fund their education through their work. Christian and Muslim artisans alike continue the shared tradition of tatreez, creating intricately embroidered cushions, bags, and pouches that carry the patterns and colours of their ancestral villages.
