7 ways we stayed true to our ethics in 2020

When things got tough in 2020 due to covid-19, we did our best to stay anchored in our ethics and that is how we define our success.
Here is our progress report:

#1 ETHICAL DESIGN:

We drastically reduced our environmental impact by manufacturing only a handful of new designs.

We put a halt on most of our production when we went into lockdown. We felt it only made sense as most of us had no need for new clothes anymore. It gave us and our customers a chance to stop and reflect on how we can consume more consciously.

#2 ETHICAL MANUFACTURING:

For the few designs we did produce, we continued to manufacture ethically in Turkey, with their ethical audit published on our website for transparency.

We are working to gradually transition from synthetic fabrics that are harmful to the environment, towards natural fabrics that will reduce our environmental impact.

#3 ETHICAL LOCAL MANUFACTURING:

We were able to employ a local sister to make hundreds of reusable face masks.

This was our first step into local ethical manufacturing and we are excited to see if we can expand our locally made range.

#4 SADAQAH ON EVERY SALE:

We helped to complete the funding of the Lebanon Rehabilitation Centre by giving a portion of every sale to Islamic Relief Australia.

Now our sadaqah goes to the general pool of funds for disability rehabilitation projects.

#5 REPAIR, REUSE, RELOVE:

We extended the lifespan of preloved EMAAN clothes that were donated by customers by giving them to clients of the National Zakat Foundation. This stopped them from being thrown into landfill and helped NZF utilised their funds for other items like food vouchers.

We also introduced an alteration service to extend the lifespan of clothes and encourage our customers to repair and reuse.

#6 IMPROVED PACKAGING & CARBON NEUTRAL DELIVERY:

We switched to Sendle to deliver our online orders, which is a B corp and 100% carbon neutral.

Our tissue paper and stickers used in packaging is also biodegradable. We will transition to biodegradable/recyclable satchels, bubble wrap and sticky tape once our current supplies run out. Once our reusable plastic bags run out for in store purchases, we will transition to surcharged paper bags and reusable calico bags.

#7 THE DEEN IS GREEN:

We continued to use our platform to raise the conversation on ethical fashion and consuming consciously from an Islamic perspective.

We do so through our social media posts, taking the time to converse with our customers in store and online and participating in global campaigns like Fashion Revolution Week.
